Epidiolex®: A Breakthrough CBD Anti-Epileptic Medication
The first prescription CBD medication is officially on the market in a new category for anti-epileptic drugs. Epidiolex was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration back in June but has recently hit shelves after the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration removed legal constraints on distribution. This is the first time that non-synthetic cannabis has been cleared for medical use by the U.S. government.
Derived from hemp plants in the United Kingdom, the Epidiolex oral solution has been released to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) or Dravet syndrome in patients two years and older. The medication is manufactured by GW Pharmaceuticals and is estimated to cost around $32,500 per year, and U.S. insurance companies have yet to confirm whether they will cover the expenses. However, the company offers the support program EPIDIOLEX Engage™ to enable access to therapy for patients by lowering out-of-pocket costs or at no cost for eligible patients.
This is an important breakthrough for modern medicine – seizures are painful and effect everyone around them. It can be devasting for families when therapies and countless medications fail, as seizures are often unpredictable and require around-the-clock care. Everyone deserves happiness and health, and medical advances like Epidiolex show the astonishment of what CBD can really do.
